History

One Dream
In 1989, Tino & Amelia Duran made their dream of publishing San Antonio’s first bilingual newspaper a reality. In 1995, Amelia provided the community with a solution to the education crisis plaguing many U.S. cities today. La Prensa Foundation is an effort to provide students, who otherwise not have the financial means, the opportunity to pursue their dreams of attaining a higher education. As the years progressed, the foundation became stronger and better structured. Now, eighteen years later, the foundation has raised and donated an excess of $3 million dollars. As for Amanda, her vision remains the same that La Prensa Foundation continue to open to door to anybody who wants a higher education when nobody else will.

One Mission
La Prensa Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)3, nonprofit organization that provides scholarships to local college students and higher education institutions. La Prensa Foundation favors youth and young adults who are confronted with financial hardships or extenuating circumstances, with the desire and motivation to pursue their dreams of a higher education. La Prensa Foundation is a component of La Prensa Texas, the only bilingual and family owned newspaper in the city.

Our goal is to help needy students achieve their educational dreams by assembling the funds received from our sponsors towards their tuition. Our mission is explicit; enhancing and strengthening the lives of youth with education providing us with a better tomorrow.

One Vision
Founder Amelia Duran remembers how hard it was on her family when her husband went to college. Therefore, because the founders lived this experience, they don’t want the same strain on young students. Allowing the GPA to be a 2.0 for those with extenuating circumstances will open the door for anybody who really wants to go to college. La Prensa Foundation wants to be the organization that gives opportunities to those that can’t get a chance anywhere else.

On October 23, 2018, La Prensa Foundation, Inc. will host its Salute to Outstanding Women in Action Awards Gala at the San Antonio Zoo. The event will recognize our recent scholarship recipients and will honor 6 special individuals that positively impact our community and want to make a difference.

One important element of the gala is our silent auction. We are asking for your assistance by donating goods, services, gift certificates, gift baskets, etc. to be used in the silent auction. The proceeds from the auction are applied to the scholarship fund. Your support through this event, offers to create the pathway to higher learning for students in San Antonio and assist them in reaching their academic and career goals. Your donation will be featured in our event program book acknowledging your company’s support benefiting our community.
