Preparing the next generation of bilingual leaders

Across San Antonio, bilingual students are carrying more than two languages. They are carrying family stories, cultural memory and the ability to connect people across generations. A new scholarship program is working to recognize that strength as leadership.

The program supports high school seniors who have used language, service and community involvement to lift others. Organizers say bilingualism should be treated as an asset, not an obstacle, especially in a city where families often move naturally between English and Spanish at home, school, work and church.

Students applying for support are encouraged to share how their background shaped their goals. Some hope to become teachers, nurses, attorneys, entrepreneurs or public servants. Others want to return to their neighborhoods and build programs for younger students.

For first generation students, a scholarship can mean more than tuition assistance. It can provide encouragement, visibility and a message that their community believes in them.
