Dear Friends,

I am reaching out to share an important update from the Bexar County Commissioners Court regarding the Spurs Arena proposal and the Frost Bank Center’s future. We have decided to not take action to place the proposed venue tax election for a downtown arena on the May ballot. This decision reflects our commitment to ensuring we have all the necessary details and robust community input before moving forward.

Your Voice Is Critical to the Process

I firmly believe that decisions of this magnitude must involve you—the residents of Bexar County. To that end, we are hosting two town halls to gather your input and address questions about the future of the Frost Bank Center and East Side economic development:

Why the May Ballot Was Deferred
Several factors influenced the court’s decision:

Incomplete Financial Details: We need a full understanding of the project’s total costs, funding structure, and long-term implications for the county.

Frost Bank Center’s Sustainability: Preserving the Frost Bank Center and Coliseum grounds as vibrant, revenue-generating assets is a priority, regardless of the Spurs’ future location.

Public Input: We want to ensure that any proposal put before voters reflects the community’s values and priorities.

Planning for the Future

While the May election is no longer an option, we remain committed to thorough planning and collaboration. The next potential opportunity for a venue tax election could be later in 2025.

Collaboration and Transparency

This process underscores the importance of transparency and collaboration. As your Commissioner, I am committed to involving the public in every step of this decision. By turning the page on behind-the-scenes discussions, we aim to craft a plan that truly reflects the aspirations of our community.

Let Your Voice Be Heard

We know that our community is filled with innovative ideas and passionate advocates. Now is the time to come together, share your insights, and work toward a solution that ensures great small business inclusion, hiring from the communities around these arenas, infrastructure and community needs are met, and fiscal responsibility.

Thank you for your engagement in this critical conversation. I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming town halls and hearing your thoughts. Together, we will make informed, thoughtful decisions for Bexar County’s future.

Yours for change,

Tommy Calvert
