In the early morning hours of August 25, members of the Dellview Community experienced a new kind of law enforcement presence in their community. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar and Detention Class 2022-Echo completed the Spirit Run in Dellview, at the invitation of Dellview Area Neighborhood Association President, Ernest Salinas.

The Spirit Run is a Bexar County tradition, completed by cadets the day before their graduation from the Detention Academy. According to a Facebook post by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, “this run demonstrates some of the physical challenges cadets face on their journey through the Detention Academy.”

The run through the neighborhood began at 7:00 AM at Dellview Park and ended back at Dellview Park a brief time later. Following the run, Sheriff Salazar spoke to the Cadets, offering them words of wisdom as they prepared to embark on their new careers as Detention Deputies with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. During his remarks, Sheriff Salazar expressed his appreciation for the invitation to bring the Spirit Run into the Community and his desire to continue hosting these runs in more neighborhoods throughout Bexar County. Refreshments and snacks were provided after the run and provided an opportunity for members of the community to speak with the Graduates, Deputies and Sheriff Salazar.

Within minutes of the run, neighbors in Dellview were posting their videos of the run on the Dellview Area Neighborhood Association Facebook group. The community response to the Spirit Run in Dellview was overwhelmingly positive. One neighbor shared their Ring footage of the run, commenting that it was great to see this on their camera and offering well wishes for the graduates. When asked why he wanted to host the Spirit Run in Dellview, Ernest Salinas said, “I think it’s a great opportunity to start building bridges between our community and all levels of law enforcement within the communities that they serve.”
