Now, Trump’s failed pandemic response is hitting women particularly hard, and threatening our lives and livelihoods. Texas women deserve a leader who will expand economic opportunity for working families, ensure access to quality, affordable health care, and won’t back down from the fight to protect our rights. That leader is Joe Biden.” BACKGROUND ON TRUMP’S BROKEN PROMISES TO TEXAS WOMEN Promise: Trump said he would “do more for women than anybody else” and promised to “take care of women and women’s health care issues.” [Trump Campaign Rally, 10/21/15] Reality: Trump and Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton are aiming to strike down the entirety of the...

BCMS Statement on Reopening of Schools

Contact: Mary E. Nava Chief Government Affairs Officer 210-382-6137 cell                                                                                                 July 22, 2020 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE BCMS COVID-19 Task Force Position Statement Regarding Face-to-Face Reopening of Schools Since its founding, the mission of the Bexar County Medical Society has been to provide quality health care for our patients and the public. We represent over 5,000 physicians and medical students who strive to make Bexar County a healthier community. Over the past six weeks, the San Antonio community has experienced a dramatic rise in the COVID-19 testing positivity rate (growing from 4% to 22%) and community/close contact transmission of the virus (now at 90%). This recent and dramatic increase in cases now strains area hospitals and healthcare delivery. This situation will require time for public health mitigation strategies to take hold so that the number of new cases is reduced to a manageable level. Until COVID-19 infections are under control, public health officials have banned (to the extent permitted by law) large indoor group settings and interactions. Yet, at the same time, Texas public schools are being told to open for in-person classroom instructions within the next few weeks. Schools at every grade level are currently faced with a near impossible challenge to implement in-person learning while simultaneously responding to legitimate health and safety concerns of the teachers, administrators, students, and their families. As physicians, we are well-aware of the...

Texans Keep On Dying, Trump and Abbott Keep Lying

For Immediate Release July 23, 2020 Contact: Abhi Rahman, (720) 299-0654, Texans Keep Dying, Trump and Abbott Keep Lying Texans Experience Another Day with Over 170 Deaths, 960 Deaths Over the Past Week, the Worst Stretch Since the Pandemic Began No, It Has Not Gotten Better Austin, TX — Today, the state of Texas reported another 173 deaths and 9,507 confirmed cases of the coronavirus. This total means that nearly 1,000 Texans have died this week, the worst stretch since the pandemic began. To put it in perspective, there were 960 deaths this week, a staggering increase from the 752 coronavirus deaths in Texas that occurred in all of June. Today, Donald Trump said he thought testing was “overrated” while the United States passed 4,000,000 coronavirus cases, the most by far of any country in the world. On the state level, Greg Abbott continues to wait on the sidelines and hang out with billionaire Elon Musk, rather than doing his job and give local leaders the tools they need to combat the coronavirus crisis in their communities.  As other countries begin to open back up and get back to normal, America remains largely shut down and Texas is one of the biggest coronavirus hotspots in the world. This is directly due to the failures of Trump and Abbott at the federal and state level. Trump and Abbott mismanaged...
