It is with deep sadness that I am forwarding this update on the passing of Dr. Fernando Martinez, our esteemed colleague and dedicated Community Health Worker Program Coordinator.
In the words of NorthWest Vista College president, Amy Bosley, “Dr. Martinez passed away recently, leaving behind a profound legacy of service, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to our students, college, and community. He was a passionate advocate for health education and community outreach, tirelessly working to empower students and enhance healthcare access for underserved populations. His leadership in the Community Health Worker program was instrumental in shaping the future of countless students who will carry forward his mission of service and care. His kindness, dedication, and compassion touched the lives of many, and he will be deeply missed. Please join me in honoring his memory and extending our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones”.
Dr. Martinez will be deeply missed but many of us will proudly carry forward his teachings and passion for education and community health. Fernando Martinez was born in El Paso, Texas on January 6, 1947, to his parents, Crisencio and Ophelia Martinez (Gonzalez).
Fernando was a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army. He served in the 101st Airborne during the Vietnam War and later in the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Fernando was a highly decorated officer. He was awarded The Bronze Star Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Defense Meritorious Service and the 3 Oak Leaf Cluster Meritorious Service Medal.
Fernando was a life-long learner. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New Mexico, a Master’s degree in Environmental Science from the University of Texas at San Antonio, a Masters degree in Healthcare Administration from Baylor University and his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership form the University of Texas at Austin.
After he retired from the US Army, Fernando joined Santa Rosa Healthcare as an administrator. He designed and implemented the first hospital system-based outreach program in San Antonio that focused on the most vulnerable zip codes of the city.
Later, Fernando became a professor at Northwest Vista College. He was the community Health Program Coordinator. He loved his job and was proof of his students who are making a positive impact in their field.
Fernando was also involved in the community. He did volunteer work with Meals on Wheels. He also worked with the non-profit Planned Parenthood. He was a proud supporter of the Animal Defense League.
Fernando is survived by his wife of 51 years, Victoria Ann Martinez (Hernandez); daughters, Amber Marie Rolofson (Benjamin Rolofson), Connie Angela Martinez; grandson, John Winslow Rolofson; sister, Martha Christian; and numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and friends.
Fernando always took care of his family. He and his wife made sure that his daughters were happy, safe and most importantly, strong, independent women.
Fernando was preceded in death by his parents, Cresencio and Ophelia Martinez, and his best companion, Newt.
The Graveside service will take place on Wednesday, March 26, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, Texas, 78209.
