In 2024, the Living Heritage Trades Academy (LHTA) continued transforming lives through its workforce development model, advancing the mission to perpetuate traditional crafts, conserve housing stock, and promote economic prosperity. Apprentices gained hands-on experience in wood window restoration, carpentry, and deconstruction, making meaningful contributions to the rehabilitation of homes in San Antonio’s west and east side communities.
These projects, completed in partnership with Family Service, San Antonio College’s Architecture Department, and the City of San Antonio Neighborhood and Housing Services Department, received vital support from our valued partners, including Family Service, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the Texas Historical Commission. Beyond preserving San Antonio’s historic structures, LHTA empowered apprentices with practical skills, confidence, and pathways to sustainable trade careers.
As we look to 2025, the Office of Historic Preservation is deepening its commitment to increasing access to training opportunities and expanding its impact. By offering free, paid apprenticeships that include hands-on and safety training, we are breaking down barriers and opening doors for individuals seeking economic stability and personal growth. Apprentices have shared stories of newfound purpose, pride, and the ability to provide for their families, underscoring the life-changing potential of this program. With new projects and partnerships on the horizon, LHTA is not just preserving history but also building brighter futures. Together, we can make 2025 another year of transformation and opportunity!
