San Antonio’s DoSeum is doing something special for our community again! From March 1 to April 20, 2025, the children’s museum is hosting the “Uniquely Us: Understanding Race and Building Unity” exhibit. Designed with Latino families and all cultures in mind, this hands-on experience is all about celebrating our differences, embracing our unique identities, and creating a stronger sense of togetherness.

Why This Matters to Our Comunidad

In Latino culture, we teach our children respeto, familia, y comunidad—values that remind us to honor our roots and uplift one another. But sometimes, tough conversations about race, identity, and inclusion can feel overwhelming. That’s why The DoSeum created this exhibit—to provide families with the tools to explore these topics in an interactive, kid-friendly way.

“This exhibit is all about learning through play,” says Meredith Doby, Chief Creative Officer at The DoSeum. “It’s a space where kids can safely explore different perspectives and build empathy while having fun.”

What to Expect at “Uniquely Us”

This isn’t just a history lesson—it’s an experience built around play and discovery! The exhibit features:

Interactive Learning – Hands-on activities that teach kids about different cultures, backgrounds, and personal identities.

Diverse Representation – Dolls, books, and visuals that reflect the beauty of our moreno, trigueño, rubio, y todos los tonos within the Latino community and beyond.

Hair and Identity Exploration – A large-scale model of different hair textures that teaches children about hair science and self-affirmation.

Empathy in Action – Role-playing activities where kids can “walk in someone else’s shoes” and understand different life experiences.

Family Discussion Guides – Resources for parents and caregivers to keep the conversation going at home.

Learn About Young Author Bellen Woodard

As part of the exhibit, visitors can learn about the inspiring story of Bellen Woodard, a 13-year-old entrepreneur and author of More than Peach. Recognized as the world’s first “crayon activist,” Bellen created a movement to promote inclusivity in art supplies, ensuring that every child can find a crayon shade that represents their skin tone. Her work continues to inspire kids across the country to embrace diversity and self-expression.

Bringing Our Cultura Into the Future

The DoSeum has worked alongside local leaders, including Karla Broadus, former chair of the UTSA African American Studies Program, and Dalia Contreras, CEO of City Education Partners, to make sure this exhibit speaks to the experiences of our diverse San Antonio community.

This is more than just an exhibit—it’s a chance to empower our children with the knowledge and confidence to navigate the world with pride in their roots and respect for others.
