Commissioner Tommy Calvert spearheaded the University Health Eastwood Village clinic that offers preventive health, primary, specialty and urgent care services. In response to a master plan from the Eastern Triangle, University Health Eastwood Village is composed of groups from the Dellcrest, Eastwood, and Huntleigh Park neighborhoods, which advocated for years for a hospital in the area. This clinic is a compromise between the needs of the community and of the military, whose Brooke Army Medical Center has been prioritized for serving Level 1 trauma victims. This was also a collaborative effort involving many, including CEO George Hernandez and his team at University Health, the Bexar County Hospital District Board of Managers, and countless experts in design, construction, and engineering. Together, we are not just breaking ground; we are bridging critical gaps in healthcare.
“Expanding medical access across Precinct 4 has been one of my proudest achievements,” says Commissioner Calvert. “This is a homecoming moment for me to be able to finally provide high-quality prenatal care among others.” This clinic follows the Commissioner’s other initiatives benefiting the Eastwood Village area. In 2016, Commissioner Calvert worked with then Councilman Warrick to extend the boundaries of the Inner City Tax Reinvestment Zone to include the neighborhood. This allowed for an extension for $1.5 million to be awarded to Childsafe, and to move a piece of property that had been vacant for decades. He also advocated for the naming of a road in the area after Rep. Ruth Jones McClendon
Thanks to the American Recovery Act funds directed by our Commissioners Court, and the outstanding partnership with University Health, the Eastwood Village Clinic will serve as a cornerstone for equity in healthcare on San Antonio’s Eastside. This state-of-the-art facility will provide comprehensive care, including preventive services, chronic disease management, and prenatal care, all designed to ensure healthier lives in our community.
The pandemic highlighted the urgent need for accessible healthcare services. University Health Eastwood Village will address this by bringing high-quality medical services directly to our neighborhoods, making healthcare the exception, not the norm.
The clinic will also feature educational programs and activities to empower our residents with the knowledge for healthier living, reinforcing our commitment to improving health outcomes and life expectancy across generations.
