Playing the violin led Sonya Gonzalez to painting later in life. Her art is influenced by music, nature, and the Hispanic culture. She has exhibited locally and nationally. Her art has been featured on the covers of several national music magazines, American Recorder, Southwestern Musician, Minnesota Orchestra Journal are some, and most recently on the cover of a worldwide publication, In the Midst A Covid-19 Anthology, November 2020. Her poems and art have been published in The Poet and in Voices de la Luna Quarterly Journal. Her mural Cuentos de mi Vida is installed at the Las Palmas Library meeting room. She has written and illustrated several books, one of which was purchased by the San Antonio Public Library System.

Established in 1913, La Prensa Texas is a historic, independently-owned bilingual newspaper and online publication. La Prensa is the first and oldest bilingual publication in the state of Texas. In June of 2018, Steve Duran resurrected the paper one more time to not only bring a positive, diverse voice to the community and to help marginalize community access relevant and meaningful information that impacts their lives.
