San Antonio, TX — Today, local partners and community leaders celebrated the groundbreaking of the new administration building at Greenies Urban Farm. This new facility, part of the farm’s Phase III expansion, will serve as the home of the Bexar County Agricultural Extension Service, furthering the farm’s mission to combat food insecurity and promote sustainable living.

During his remarks, Commissioner Tommy Calvert (Pct 4) highlighted the challenges facing Bexar County residents due to rising food prices:

“Since 2020, grocery prices have risen by 34%, leaving many families in Bexar County struggling to afford basic necessities. The Greenies Urban Farm is our county’s way of easing that burden. By growing fresh, affordable food right here, we’re reducing the impact of inflation on our most vulnerable residents. This farm is not just feeding people—it’s providing a sustainable solution to the rising cost of living. This farm is a shining example of what responsible, community-centered development looks like.

The Commissioner also praised the partnerships that have helped make Greenies Urban Farm a community hub. These efforts, along with local support, have already enabled the farm to provide over 25,000 pounds of fresh food to families in need since its inception.

The event featured performances by the Young Men’s Leadership Academy Band and remarks from project partners, including Nelda Speller, County Extension Director, Debra J. Dockery, Architect, PCNunnelly Construction and Bexar County Facilities Management.

The new $10 million, 17,000-square-foot headquarters will provide space for health and nutrition classes, 4-H initiatives, and community outreach. The facility will serve as a center for educating residents on sustainable agriculture and using food as medicine to combat diseases like diabetes and heart disease.

Community members, media, and local officials came together to witness this exciting new chapter for the community. The award-winning urban farm is located in a nationally designated food desert, but has a partnership with the San Antonio Food Bank and over 200 nonprofit organizations. The farm has won a National Association of Counties Achievement award in Denver as well as the Texas A&M Superior Service Award, recognizing it as a model for other community farming initiatives to follow.

Video clips from the ceremony can be viewed here.

The farm has provided more than 25,000 pounds of super greens and fruits to the community.
