Born and raised in La Paz, Bolivia, Berdegué moved to San Antonio in 2000 with his family and his camera. His passion is dutifully tolerated by his wife Claudia and three children. He discusses his collection of market photos here:
“’Emerging Markets’ is more than a collection of still-images of the produce markets in my native Bolivia. Through its low-speed shooting and forced-processing techniques, the work is an attempt to capture and convey not only light, but also sounds, aromas, temperature, even the ancestral mixture of fatigue and pride of its subjects. Hence the departure from a more conventional treatment of color, texture, or balance in favour of form, rhythm, and context. Always context.
It is my hope that the viewer will meet challenging exchanges with each piece individually, as well as with the group as a whole, similar to those experienced in the act of photographing them. “
