Chris Montoya is self-taught, San Antonio based, muralist and painter. Drawn to art at a young age, he began his journey being attracted to the letter form, color and design in the graffiti murals along the walls seen walking home from school. Fusing graffiti with cultural symbols of pattern, textile, and Mexican American iconography, Chris began forming his own style and started working on large scale murals around his neighborhood. For his first few murals, Chris used relatable characters in his work in hopes of bringing inspiring art to the people of the community.
In years following his breakout in the local mural and art scenes, Chris has been commissioned to work with several large companies, including campaigns with national names such as AARP. He has also been featured in publications such as Texas Monthly and numerous local news outlets. His work has also been exhibited in notable galleries including the Mexic-Arte Museum, McNay Museum, Blue-Star Contemporary, Centro de Artes and Presa House Gallery. Chris believes art has the power to spark aspirations of something greater than oneself, and continues to evolve first as a person and then an artist. In his free time, Chris enjoys working out, playing music and being involved with his local faith community.
